How to Perform Hajj

Introduction

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and an obligatory act of worship for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it. It takes place during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah.

Step 1: Enter the State of Ihram

At the Miqat, make your intention (niyyah) for Hajj, put on the Ihram garments, and recite the Talbiyah. Maintain the rules of Ihram throughout the pilgrimage.

Step 2: Arrive in Mina (8th Dhul Hijjah)

Travel to Mina on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah and spend the day and night there in worship and prayer.

Step 3: Stand at Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah)

The standing at Arafat (Wuquf) is the most essential pillar of Hajj. Spend the afternoon in supplication, remembrance of Allah, and reflection until sunset.

Step 4: Muzdalifah

After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah, offer Maghrib and Isha prayers combined, and collect pebbles for the stoning ritual.

Step 5: Rami (Stoning of the Devil)

On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha), stone the large Jamarat pillar (Jamarat al-Aqabah) with seven pebbles.

Step 6: Sacrifice (Qurbani)

Offer an animal sacrifice in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son.

Step 7: Shave or Trim Hair

Men shave or trim their hair; women trim a small portion. This marks partial exit from Ihram.

Step 8: Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i

Return to Makkah and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (circling the Kaaba seven times), followed by Sa'i between Safa and Marwa.

Step 9: Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th Dhul Hijjah)

Return to Mina and stone all three Jamarat pillars each day. Pilgrims may leave after the 12th if they wish.

Step 10: Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf)

Before leaving Makkah, perform a final Tawaf as a farewell to the Kaaba.

Conclusion

Hajj is a profound spiritual journey. May Allah accept your Hajj and grant you a Mabrur (accepted) pilgrimage.
